Silver and bronze won by Lewes athletes

The Lewes Athletics Club won silver and bronze medals at the Sussex Road Relay championships at Christ's Hospital, near Horsham, on Easter Saturday.

The over 60s men's team always produce a medal winning performance at this event and they turned up trumps again on Saturday.

Peter Masters, and ever-present member of the squad in recent years, set the team up with a steady fifth place in the first of the three 3.3km legs, clocking 14m39s.

Mike Lane lifted the team to third place on the second leg in 14m52s, while Mike Tait anchored the team, moving up to second place in 14m10s, with a total time of 43m41s, compared with the much younger Chichester team's record-breaking time of 39m27s.

The bronze medals came at the other extreme of the age groups when the under 15s girls' team finished third in 20m40s, behind Worthing's winning time of 20m03s.

The younger athletes race over three 1.8km laps and Bella King held fourth place for Lewes after the first leg in 7m07s.

Lizzie Keep closed the gaps but remained fourth on the second leg, clocking 6m57s, while Jessica Lewis clocked 6m36s on the final leg, lifting the team into third place and also being rewarded with the third fastest time of the day.

Former steeplechase international Bill Mullett had a cracking battle with Arena 80's Paul Gasson on the first leg of the Over 50 men's race before having to concede first place by just 25 yards.

The Lewes runner's 11m42s clocking was the fourth fastest leg of the day.

Colin Wibley dropped to third on the second leg in 12m37s while John Stock just slipped out of the medals on the final circuit in 13min. 17sec.

On the opening leg of this race, Barry Blackwell from Hailsham, running for the Brighton & Hove team, clocked 11m58s for fourth place, one position ahead of Heathfield's Colin Simpson who clocked 12m25s for the Phoenix Club.

There was a fifth placing for the Lewes Under 13 girls' team with Maddy Smith clocking 7m10s for sixth place on the first leg; Hannah Jackson holding her on on lap two in 7m16s, and Danielle Collins moving up to fifth on the final circuit in 7m26s.

Chris Naylor, from Peacehaven, running for Arena 80 team, had a fine run in the women's Over 40 race, leading the runners home on the opening leg in 12m57s, earning her second fastest time of the day.

Fellow Peacehaven athlete Amanda Hester, running for Brighton & Hove, finished second on this opening leg in 13m14s, while the Lewes team of Sue Smith (14m45s), Sheila Cullen (16m44s) and Julia Black (16m53s) held on to seventh place throughout the race.

The Under 17/20s do not have a separate race at these championships and are incorporated into the senior teams.

Matt Basford, Ashley Williams and Josh Burgess helped the Lewes senior squad into eighth place.

Dave Bradford had a fine first leg to finish sixth in 11m10s; Peter Miller dropped to 13th in 13m59s; Alan Jackson finished 12th in 12m37s; Burgess was tenth in 11m51s, Williams tenth in 11m13s, and Basford was the team's fastest runner, clocking 10m41s for eighth place. This earnt him third-fastest under 17 time of the day.

In the senior women's race, Charlotte White, who is still under 17, had probably her best run since returning to competition earlier in the year to finish 12th on the opening leg in 13m34s.

Caitlin Lloyd dropped to 13th on the second circuit in 14m05s, while Becky Hawkes retained that placing on the final leg in 13m50s.

Lewes also finished a "B" team, with Natalie Fuller clocking 13m36s, Lisa Jackson 15m54s and Karen Williams 17m55s for 17th place.

In the under 15 boys' race, Matt Rethy (6m21s) Louis Gower (6m39s) and James Hawkes (7m00s) finished in ninth place, while the over 40s team of Neil Gower (14m46s), Phil Jones (12m21s), Jeremy Wainwright (12m51s) and Phil Tuck (13m02s) finished eighth.
