STEYNING TAKE LOCAL SPOILS

A LONE diving header of top quality from Paul McMichael eased Steyning through to the semi-finals of the Division Three Cup, in the first meeting of these two sides as County League clubs.

It was evident that both teams felt there was too much at stake and the match was cagey at best and dull at its worst. Perhaps the pre-match anticipation had made spectators' expectations rise unnecessarily and the game fizzled out as a consequence.

There was no denying McMichael his crowning moment, however. With 20 minutes left, Ben Garman sent in a testing cross from the right flank and McMichael ghosted in unmarked at the far post to finish with no little style.
