Was this the last one?

WORTHING'S Evening League has been a feature of the town's summer sporting programme for many years, giving immeasurable pleasure to hundreds of local cricketers, accomplished and otherwise.

It would be sad if Monday's title play-off brought down the final curtain on this competition. Only five clubs contested this year's league '” such a contrast to the heady days of the late 1980s when 35 teams filled five divisions.

Secretary Laurie Claydon is not optimistic about 2007. "There are many reasons for the League's demise '” time, cost, and a dwindling number of young players participating in the game today. And no works teams, as there were 20 years ago. It hangs on whether Chippingdale and St Mary's can take part next year. Less than four teams will be a waste of time."
