Winners of ex-racehorse award for third time

A Sussex rider and a former racehorse have won a special award for the third time.

ASussex rider and a former racehorse have won a special award for the third time.

Jonathan Martin (31), who runs a livery yard at Barnham, and Swift Alliance, have won the affiliated showjumping award in the Racehorses to Riding Horses annual awards run by South Essex Insurance Brokers.

Now in its fifth year the competition aims to encourage the re-training of thoroughbred horses out of racing. Horses entered accrue points for competition placings throughout the season. The horses with the most points win. There are five affiliated sections and a class for unaffiliated competition that every year is the most hard fought

Swift Alliance, now ten, raced as a two-year-old, was gelded at three and won one race at Folkestone. But he lacked the speed for Class 1 races and he was sold out of racing in 1999 from Lady Herries at Angmering Park.
