Winning come rain or shine

First they defeated a strong Saffrons trio 19-8 and despite deteriorating weather in the afternoon, they overcame wet, cold and windy conditions to beat The Parade 17-7.

Adastra’s Top Club hopes have bitten the dust, however, as they lost on all four rinks against a very accomplished team from Uckfield.

Meanwhile, a Lindfield B squad negotiated the second round of the national double fours as the two rinks won by 14 shots at Peacehaven.

Any hopes the hosts had of mounting a comeback were well and truly squashed when Ken Eldred’s rink picked up a seven on the 19th end.

The A team were at Woodingdean on Friday and pulled away in the second half to earn a home tie against Mackie.

In the Gladys Rowland competition, Chris Sugarhood, Jennie Holland, Carol Watson and Sue Willmott were 29-7 victors at East Wittering and in the county triples the latter three got through to the second round after an extra end against Ringmer.

Last season’s county singles finalist Keith Holman had a tricky first game at Preston against Phil Soper but got through to face clubmate Tom Palmer in the enxt round.

This Saturday the club have a stall on the Common for Village Day, while the green will be open to anyone wanting to try out the game.

Burgess Hill’s A team made progress in the national double fours and will now play Hollingbury A but the Top Club A team were edged out 2-3 by Hove & Kingsway.

The weekend finished successfully when the national over 60s mixed double fours team won at Popesmead.

In the national double fours Hurst A put out fancied Lancing 39-28 to earn a trip to Henfield, while Brian Truran turned around a 3-9 deficit to beat Shoreham’s Jamie Dunk 21-18 in the county champion of champions.

Hurst teams were beaten in the ladies Top Club and the men’s Edward Rowland.
