Young talent backed by Sporting Club

THE 1066 Sporting Club unveiled its line-up of sponsored children for 2005 during a special get-together at Horntye Park Sports Complex on Monday evening.

The list has a familiar feel to it as gymnast Jodie Saxby, tennis players Suzy Larkin and Bianca Jones, table tennis starlet James Winchester, golfer Charlotte Catley and triathlete Barney Reed are all to carry on receiving financial backing for coaching and travelling expenses.

"I think it should be a good year," said Terry Avann, chairman of the Sporting Club which has pumped over 10,000 into local sport since its inauguration in March 2002. "But we're hoping to raise more money this year so that we can sponsor more people next year."

In addition to the individual sponsorship, it will continue its backing of the Rother & South East Sussex Youth Football League into next season and of the ever-expanding 1066 Specials football team, which provides opportunities for children with special needs.

It has also declared Hayley Okines, who suffers from a rare premature ageing disease called Progeria, as its 'inspiration'. She will represent the Sporting Club, which has also made a number of one off donations to both sporting and charity causes, at the various Style Promotions organised events from which the not-for-profit organisation benefits.

The Sporting Club is running a free stoolball induction day for boys and girls aged eight to 15 on Sunday March 6 from 1-4pm. Anybody interested need only turn up at Horntye for what is intended to be an appetiser for the subsequent Junior Indoor Stoolball League.
