Church to hold service to mark 100th anniversary of SS Mendi

St John The Evangelist church in Newtimber is putting on a special commemoration service tomorrow (February 18) to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Mendi in the English Channel.

The bishop of Chichester, archdeacon of Horsham, and guests from the South African High Commission will join the congregation at the church in Newtimber, Hassocks at 11am.

The event a 100 years ago resulted in 671 South African men drowning on their way to assist the allied forces in the First World War.
