School's celebration after retaining Mid Sussex Athletics Sports Competition title

The Windmills Junior School, in Dale Avenue, Hassocks, took part in the annual Mid Sussex Athletics Sports Competition on Monday, July 11.

The event, organised by Oakmeeds, saw seven local primary and junior schools come together and compete in a range of sports.

Last year The Windmills won the competition for the first time in several years and were looking to build on the success.

Despite the threat of rain competitor’s spirits were not dampened as the children took part in traditional field and track activities including skipping, running, throwing and jumping.

In total there were nine events and each school had two children entered into each.

“It was really enjoyable and an amazing experience. The adrenaline rush that you could feel before doing your race made you feel nervous and excited at the same time. And then when I won it felt great”, said Bunty Yates of year 4.

“I was really proud to be selected. You had to compete against your own class mates and year group to get a place. I came first in the vortex howler which made me even prouder”, Johnny Phillips of year 4 added.

Trophies were awarded for the strongest girls and boys team in each year group. The Windmills were awarded the trophies for the boys and girls in year 4 and the boys and girls in year 6.

Pupils collected points throughout the day for every position and with the track and field events running simultaneously it was difficult for individual schools to work out how well they were doing as a team.

The Windmills were crowned overall champions for the second year running whilst St Lawrence C Of E Primary School and London Meed Primary School finished second and third respectively.

Leila Murray, headteacher at The Windmills, said: “An ecstatic cheer went out from the team and The Windmills parents as it was announced that we had won again for the second year.

“Every single child represented the school magnificently and with great pride. There were certainly some parents leaving with slightly hoarse voices having cheered and supported with great gusto.

“It was wonderful to see the children cheering and encouraging each other and being such a strong and supportive team.

“It was a fantastic afternoon and one that will live long in the memory of all that were there.
