The crew were called away from carwashing duties around midday on Saturday, to deal with reports of a car on fire.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service representative said the call turned out to be a false alarm caused by oil on a hot engine.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service representative said: “We’d like to say a big thanks to the local community in Haywards Heath who were incredibly generous with their donations.

“We were very fortunate with the weather and it was fantastic to be able to raise over £500 for the Fire Fighters Charity.

“The charity is one very close to our hearts. It is the only official organisation that supports injured firefighters and their families in their time of need.”

The charity car wash is an annual event, which raises money and gives fire crews a chance to make contact with members of the public and provide tips on home and road safety.
