Boundary changes could ‘split Hassocks down the middle’

Draft proposals would see parts of the current Hassocks and Victoria division transferred to the Hurstpierpoint and Bolney ward.

The county council is due to submit its proposed changes to the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, which will make the final decision.

At a Full Council meeting on Friday Andy Petch (Ind, Hassocks and Victoria) said: “I’m a bit disappointed to see the village of Hassocks split down the middle.”

He argued that they had been working to bring communities together, as Clayton and Keymer had merged to create Hassocks Parish Council in 2000.

Andrew Barrett-Miles (Con, Burgess Hill Town) raised concerns that the proposals ‘moved away from well established community patches’, and given the level of uncertainty over future development he felt there was some merit in maintaining the status quo.
