New Haywards Heath crossing '˜vital' for pedestrian safety

Plans for a new pedestrian crossing in Haywards Heath are '˜vital' to safeguard residents, according to the town's mayor.

West Sussex County Council has included proposals for a new Puffin crossing in Wivelsfield Road in its schedule of works for 2016/17.

The estimated cost for the scheme is £47,000 and would be funded from the county council’s capital budget.

Sujan Wickremaratchi, who represents the area on the county council and is Haywards Heath’s mayor, said: “I have been campaigning for this crossing on behalf of our residents for years. It is absolutely vital that this crossing is delivered as soon as possible.

“Wivelsfield Road is a extremely busy road now and with the Sainsbury’s local and the Pets Corner and Dinnages it is vital to safeguard all our residents, who will be able to cross this very busy road safely. I fully support this and will continue to support our local residents until the crossing is delivered.”

The county council consulted on proposals in December 2014 with two residents raising parking and congestion issues.

But an officers’ report argues that the scheme will not only make the area safer for pedestrians, especially school children to cross, the inclusion of detectors on the crossing and in the road will minimise any delays to motorists.
