Eyewitness Jimmy King, who took the video, said it happened around 11pm yesterday (April 14).

He told the Mid Sussex Times: “A Land Rover suddenly without warning caught fire setting a blaze to the driveway and illuminating the whole street with an orange glow.

“After shocked neighbours dialed the emergency services, the car’s owner climbed onto the garage roof holding a garden hose in an attempt to extinguish the flames.

“Eventually the fire department arrived with three trucks leading to multiple crew members running into action subduing the fire into submission.

“Fortunately no one was injured, although the potent smell of burnt tarmac and rubber remained throughout the area.”

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service representative said they were called at 11.08pm, and sent two fire enignes from Burgess Hill and one from Hurstpierpoint.

She said firefighters in breathing apparatus used hose reels and a dry powder extinguisher to tackle the blaze.

The car was severely damaged, while the nearby garage was damaged by fire and the door and fascia of the house were damaged by heat.
