Buzby made someone happy with appearance on soggy summer day

Hands up who remembers Buzby! If you were a nipper when the big bird was launched, you’re probably galloping headlong towards the ‘50’ milestone now.

There’s a happy thought.

For those who did not grow up in the 1970s and 1980s, Buzby was a yellow bird – who later became orange – whose catchphrase was: “Make some one happy with a phone call”.

He was the friendly face of British Post Office Telephones and was voiced by Bernard Cribbens.

The meerkat of his day, Buzby appeared at many a school fete, including one at the Colwood and Larchwood Hospitals School fete, in Haywards Heath, in July 1980.

A report in the Mid Sussex Times started with the dreaded British summer phrase: “Despite the weather...” and said more than £370 was raised, which was spent on improving the children’s recreational facilities.

While Buzby was enjoying the fete, pupils from Beacon School, in Crowborough were rolling up their sleeves to clear a new bridlepath.

The 45-strong group, who had just taken their O-Levels, were working at Ditchling Common when the Mid Sussex Times photographer took this picture.

They spent the morning clearing the path to make a circular route around the Common for horse riders.

Meanwhile, pupils from St Paul’s School, Haywards Heath, were bringing home the silverware following the Mid Sussex Road Safety Rally at Windmills School, Hassocks.

The ‘A’ team won the John Foyle Trophy for the third time since 1975, while Simon Wood became the first winner of the senior trophy for the best individual performance.
